We all know the importance of eating healthy and how it can contribute to the quality and length of your life. You’ve probably heard of the Vegan and Paleo diets. Today we’re going to explore the pros and cons of both lifestyle diets and help you determine if one of these choices is best for you. Both diets are known to help people lose weight and reduce inflammation in the body.
Let’s start with Paleo. The Paleo diet is patterned after what prehistoric man would eat. It’s focused on what man ate in a hunting and gathering era. It includes no processed foods, lots of meat, vegetables and fruit. Usually no grains or legumes although some include rice. This diet has been known to help people lower their blood pressure, balance their blood sugar, and improve appetite control.
This diet can come with a downside for some. One of the most common complaints is that it can get expensive. Because of the lack of grains which are usually inexpensive and filling most of your money is spent on protein. It can also be challenging for athletes who are trying to gain or maintain weight because most athletes need at least 3-6 grams of carbs a day to maintain their weight.
The Vegan diet consists entirely of plant based foods and avoids all meat products. It is considered healthy because it is low in saturated fats, and has been known to lower blood pressure. It is often associated with weight loss. Some experts say it can even reduce the risk of some types of cancer. Some people choose this diet for health reasons and others choose it for religious or personal beliefs about animal cruelty. It is also considered a “green diet” because it's comprised of plants, it has more sustainability, which is good for the environment.
There are a few downsides to the Vegan diet, one being that it lacks a few vital nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, folate, and B-12. Many Vegans combat this by simply supplementing their diets with fortified foods or supplements.
Both of these diets can be extremely good for your health and beneficial. However their extreme differences just prove that there is no one size fits all diet. Consider your goals, and your lifestyle and talk with your doctor to determine if one of these would be a good fit.
